In April, 2013, I visited the Norias section of the King Ranch. The vast and wild King Ranch is bigger than Rhode Island and stretches 825,000 acres in South Texas. The section that I visited is covered with a beautiful, twisty, oak tree forest. I was fasinated by the power of these wavy lines surrounding me and I wish I could make this a giant painting to communicate that feeling, but I will have to settle for 42" by 36". Which is big for my walls at least... The tour guide told us that Pancho Villa and his bandits hid out here as they tried to attack the ranch back in the day. This place is just asking for a movie to be made here... it is that mysterious and beautiful.

I hope that I do it justice... we'll have to wait and see.

6.10.2013

I added more sagey greens to the leaves and branches to show more contrast. I like how on the top left you can see the sky through the branches... it really draws my eye there... This painting has me thinking about Jackson Pollock's work a lot. All these crazy layers of branches one on top of the other... you can feel the natural abstraction. Anyway, I also have been thinking about Burchfield's work as well. All his wild trees with abstract patterns. I hope that I am able to capture the scale and depth of all these hundreds of trees... the overwhelming feeling of squiggly repetition...I've got more work to do...
