Eastside Rising.

The winter was ending here in Austin when painting this image first came to my mind. At the time, I drove east to work every morning.  As I drove in my half awake stupor,  I was always awe struck by the beauty of the sunrise.  There is something special about that time of the morning and it is somehow easier to meditate on God's wonders and easier to hope for the good things to come. As I drove I noticed that at the intersection of William Cannon Rd. and Pleasant Valley Rd. hundreds of birds like to congregate.  They all sit on the wires, side by side- their tails wafting back and forth for balance like little wooden toys. Though it's quite dangerous to drive your car beneath them, it is a very beautiful site to see.

This painting was also an experiment using the edges of the canvas.  Some parts are supposed to connect while others are not.

"The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,
       shining ever brighter till the full light of day.

But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
       they do not know what makes them stumble."

-the Bible, Proverbs 4:18-19

"In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning
I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation."

-the Bible, Psalm 5:3

"A  painting lives by companionship, expanding and quickening in the eyes
of the sensitive observer.  It dies by the same token.  It is therefore a
risky & unfeeling act to send it out into the world."
-Tiger's Eye Magazine 1947.
